Mathlympics Narrative- Week 4&5

Narrative Assessment:
Learning Coach:  Diana Wilkes         Date: 25 August 2016
Stephan, Joshua, Nehal & Tristan
Learning Area:         Maths
Key Competency:    Using language, symbols & texts, Managing Self
NZC AO:                   Level 2 Measurement→ Create and use appropriate units and devices
to measure length, area, volume and capacity, weight (mass), turn
                                      (angle), temperature, and time.
Learning Observed
Ormiston ICON COLLABORATE.jpgThese boys have participated in the Mathlympics iExperience which has involved a series of measurement challenges, a BreakOut code team problem solving task in Week 4 and the archery challenge in Week 5.  The mini-mathlympics iExperience enabled the boys to be curious as they explored the resources in the various mathlympics activities where they measured volume, capacity, distance, time and practiced setting up a calendar. They were encouraged to explore the different resources and see how they could build on their maths capability. They connected the knowledge that they already had about good ways to practise maths capability with the equipment and used it to make conclusions about what to do with the equipment.  In the BreakOut EDU activity Joshua and Nehal were very excited and they all collaborated well and managed to crack some codes. It was great to observe how well they collaborated together with the new additions to their team and how they applied their prior knowledge to the bow and arrow design.  Joshua, Aarav and Nehal worked together on their design while Stephan and Tristan designed their own bow & arrow.  They were inspired by some videos before they began to draw their design and list the materials needed.  They built their design with materials making modifications as they went and practiced shooting before the final competition.  It was wonderful to see how enthusiastic they were in this learning and their reflections demonstrated this.

Next Learning Steps
  • Tell your family about how you improved your bow and
arrow to make it shoot farther
  • IMG_1240.JPGWrite a blog post to reflect on the learning especially what you’d do differently next time.
  • Practice measuring at home (eg. when cooking)
  • Try to improve your bow and arrow or make a new design-
what makes it better?

Tristan's Fractions Learning Story

Learner: Tristan
Learning Coach: T.Dillner           Date: 10.6.16
Learning Area: Maths
Key Competency: Using Language, Symbols & Text, Managing Self
Learning Observed
Tristan was using Mathletics as part of his daily learning. The task that he was completing involved finding a fraction of a group e.g. ¼ of 24 or ⅜ of 32. While he was doing this, Tristan didn’t fully understand what the question was asking him to do. Tristan made a capable learning decision and came to look for help. This shows that he was also curious to know the answer and extend his knowledge.
First of all Tristan collected some counters so he could physically move the materials around and understand how to make even groups. Then he practiced his basic facts by completing simple multiplication equations like 3x4, 8x3, 6x4.
Afterwards, Tristan was able to complete the set Mathletics tasks on his own without using the counters to help him.

Tristan - “I was learning about fractions. When I was learning I was moving the beans to make groups to have the same numbers. I was curious because I was asking questions.”
Evidence of learning

Next Learning Steps
  • Keep it up with making great responsible learning choices.
  • Practice more fractions based Mathletics tasks at school and at home.
  • Attend some of the opt-in Maths workshops about fractions.

Diamonds Maths Group Measuring Learning Story

Learner: Kim, Gary, Tristan and Helen (Diamonds)   Learning Coach: Bex Remington          Date: 29 June 2015
Learning Area: iDevelop - Maths: Measuring Cubes
Learning Observed
The Diamonds maths group has been looking at measurement and how different units of measurement work.  This session was focused on how to make estimates and measure using objects found around the habitat.  The object we were using was popsicle sticks.  The group decided this would be a good thing to use because they are all the same length and not many would be needed to measure large objects.  Today we used an outline of Gary’s body to make our object to measure and the group decided which body parts we could estimate and measure.  The learners had to estimate how many popsicle sticks they would need to measure different parts and this started a discussion about whether the sticks should be used end to end or lying beside it each.  The group all decided that this would depend on the size of the object.  It would take too many to measure the length of Gary’s body if we did side by side but this method would be okay to measure the width of a finger.  The group agreed that this task was a fun way to learn about measuring because it was about them!
Evidence of learning

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
The learners in the Diamonds group are developing their capabilities in measurement.  They are able to discuss their answers showing that they understand language, symbols and text. All of the learners were able to work together and take on different roles within the task, which demonstrated participation and contribution and relating to others.
Next Learning Steps
  • Explore measuring other items using a mixture everyday objects
  • Begin using formal measurement units
  • Estimate using formal measurement units before measuring
